Voiceover Trick or Treat

Here’s a scary thought:  What if old Goldenballs decided to become a voiceover?

Mu-hahaha!!

Happy Halloween Everybody!!

Voiceover Tips

So what to do while you wait for that all important call?  Promote yourself of course!  And today’s voiceover tip is a simple way of getting a step up on the competition…

Have a photo on your business card!

Simple as that!  And it works - after you’ve been out there networking, those potential contacts will remember you when they look at your business card again in a few weeks time.

Voiceover Tips

Today’s tip is almost the opposite of yesterday’s.

It can take a fair while to break into this business.  If you’re new, you’re not just going to get booked on day one.  It’ll only be after you’ve done a few gigs (successfully) that people will start booking you again and again.  So don’t go beating yourself up if the phone’s not hopping immediately.  It takes time and persistence to make it as a successful voiceover.

Voiceover Tips

Today’s tip is about urgency.

If you get a message that someone is trying to book you for a gig, don’t wait a single minute.  Call back immediately!

Ad agencies are usually up against very tight deadlines, and if you take too long getting back to them, they’ll simply book a voiceover who is answering their phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

WHY SHOULD I SIGN UP? WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

Designed by copywriters for copywriters, we market to copywriters and producers in advertising agencies - our focus is therefore on commercial work.

DO YOU CHARGE COMMISSION?

No. We work on a subscription basis & our rate is affordable (one gig per year will more than cover your subscription costs).

ARE YOU AN AGENT?

Do we wear cheap suits and bad cologne? The answer is no.

BUT WHAT IF I HAVE AN AGENT?

No problem. Just put down their telephone number instead of your own if you wish to work through your agent.

DO PEOPLE LOOKING FOR VOs CONTACT ME DIRECTLY?

Yes. They contact you via the telephone number that you provide.

CAN I CANCEL AT ANY TIME?

Yes.

IF I DECIDE TO JOIN YOU, WHAT ELSE DO YOU NEED FROM ME?

Three things:

1. A highly professional voice demo. Remember - copywriter attention span is zero, so no long poetic reads from Shakespeare.

2. A black and white photo (we know you’re in radio for a reason, but try make it a good one)

3. Your credit card details. We have to pay for our yacht somehow, you know.

Voiceover Tips

This tip sounds a lttle obvious, but it is imperative and the absolute least you can do as a voiceover to get in a bit of practice

Spend at least half an hour a day listening to existing radio ads, and giving them a bash yourself (out loud, and preferably to a guinea pig).  Resist the urge to over-dramatize and go silly.  The purpose of this exercise is to learn how to mimic other voiceover’s intonations, style and inflections.
